Activities for the 100th Day of School!
Yay! I love to have fun with my kids all the time, so I get excited about the activities for 100th day of school! I definitely put in too much time preparing for the 100th day of school in my earlier teaching days. Over the years I found some fun, no & low-prep activities to do with my littles. I even created my own Growth Mindset writing prompt that I’m sharing with you for free today!
The week before the 100th Day of School!
1. I sent home a gallon size bag for students to put 100 things
in (think buttons, beads, etc. It just had to fit in the bag). If they never
brought anything, then I would let them borrow my math manipulatives for the
activities.
2. We also let the kids dress out of uniform if they brought a
100th day of school shirt, just for fun!
3. I asked for donations:
100 Solo Cups
2 bags of mini marshmallows divided into 6 Ziplock bags of 100
3 boxes of round toothpicks
(Some years I did the 100th day of school snack, and other years I didn’t. I will link that freebie later)
Reading for the 100th Day of School
You will need: a 100 chart and 100 small stickers
Normally, the bulk of my literacy block was for differentiated centers with an additional writing time. On the 100th day of school I let the kids read out of my easier leveled bins with a stuffed animal and put a sticker on the class 100 chart each time they read a book. The goal was that everyone together would reach 100 books by the end of the day (about 4 books per kid).
Word Work for the 100th Day of School
You will need: clipboards, a 100 words sheet (free link at the end of this post)
In the word work station, they got a clipboard and a paper with 100 lines to write the room. They were so determined to write 100 words by the end of the day! I let the kids work on both reading 100 books and writing 100 words if they had extra time.
Do you want to use 100 phonics-based words? Cut out the words from my Sound Mats & Phonics picture card resource.
Writing for the 100th Day of School to reflect on Growth Mindset
You will need: My Free Growth Mindset sheet crayons or other coloring things
Let me start by saying what didn’t work for me. My 1st few years we tried writing what it would be like to be 100, but that was very unsuccessful. My 1st and 2nd graders didn’t have a good idea of what it would be like, and they got stuck in coming up with ideas. I then switched to if they had 100 dollars. Those were funny, but that’s about it.
If I could go back, I would really build on having a Growth Mindset. We would remember our discussions of things we couldn’t do YET and things we wanted to get better at. I created a Writing FREEBIE for what they have gotten better at after 100 days of school. I hope you like it! I would love to see it in action if you could email me or tag me on Instagram @ EngagedLittleLearners
Math for the 100th Day of School
You will need: Bags of 100 items, 100 charts with dice and moving pieces, 100 charts cut into puzzles, sets of 100 building items. You’ll see more when you read each station.
I would start math by reading a book about 100, watching the BrainPopJr. on 100 and moving our bodies to 100 using Jack Hartman’s song. (Links below), then would be times for our 100th day of school stations or centers.
Station 1: Count your items by groups of 10. Remember how I had kids bring in 100 items? This is where they would gets used. If my kids didn’t bring in 100 of an item, then I let them use things like my cubes, links, etc. to make their 100.
Station 2: Work together to build a structure with the 100 Solo Cups donation. This was their favorite station for sure!
Station 3: Race to 100. This is a super simple game. You need a 100 chart, dice, and a piece for each player to move. They take turns rolling and moving their piece towards 100. The first to 100 wins. Need a 100’s chart along with other addition games? Check out my resource below!
Station 4: Count your items by groups of 5 like in station 1. This doesn’t always use the whole time, so they can count a friend’s items or write about what they brought using the page in the freebie I have linked below
Station 5: 100 chart puzzles. Print about SIX 100 charts on different colored cardstock and laminate. Cut the charts into different puzzle pieces. The kids will put the puzzles together. You want at least 1 more puzzle than kids at the station so that they can switch out puzzles when they are done. The different colored cardstock will help keep them organized.
Station 6: Partner build with 100 stacking cubes. Some years I would ask parents buy and put together the 100th day of school snack activity in the freebie linked, but some years this didn’t work out. I have tons of stacking cubes and the kids love to build, so this was a great station.
Science for the 100th Day of School
You will need: Bags of 100 mini marshmallows (1 bag for each group), toothpicks
We get to be engineers as a team! At the end of the day, we have an Expedition block (My roots are in EL Education formerly known as Expeditionary Learning). I put our normal expedition on hold to make marshmallow toothpick creations.
I had 6 tables, so 6 teams of kids. We would discuss group work norms like solving problems together, making sure everyone’s voices were heard, compromising, etc.
Then, I would give each team 100 marshmallows and a bunch of toothpicks (I let them use however many toothpicks they needed). I would give time updates since this was right before the end of the school day.
At the end we would marvel at each other’s designs and take pictures. I let them dry and put them in my windowsill for about a week.
